Approximately 60 inches have fallen already, and the snow is adding to the rooftops. The snow may be soft now, but there is a lot of him and he could get heavy quickly.

“You can insulate your house, you may wind, and the most important thing to do is call a qualified contractor to come take a look,” said Scribner. “You have to take care of insulation, heat and roof.”

Baker said that the threats are the most important buildings with flat roofs, but this additional load of snow is a threat to the rooftops. It recommends removing snow from roofs and terraces, where possible, and said a roof rake is the safest option do-it-yourself. Weed & Duryea has a supply of roof rakes in stock.
“If we get rain on top of all this snow, which will be another problem,” Baker said. “The snow will act as a sponge and the extra weight could really cause trouble.”
Baker said homeowners should not climb on roofs, and should contact a professional contractor to help.
Bridges and roofs already burdened by packs of heavy snow could be compromised by the other 15 inches of snow that hit New Canaan Wednesday and Thursday. Fire Marshal Fred Baker said that people should try to clear snow if possible, and watch for signs of structural damage that can lead to a collapse.
“You can hear strange noises, the building was creaking,” he said. “There could be a deviation in the ceilings and beams.”
Metro-North train that slipped off the trail and into a barricade should not be repaired quickly.
