Myanmar Junta-Backed Party Claims Election Win

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Myanmar’s junta-backed party claimed a landslide win in polls denounced by the United Nations as army clashes with ethnic minorities subsided, allowing thousands to return home after they fled yesterday to neighboring Thailand.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party formed by Prime Minister Thein Sein said it won about 80 percent of seats in the Nov. 7 election, Agence France-Presse reported, citing an unidentified party source. The result was “not surprising” and may cause conflicts throughout the country to worsen, said Aung Naing Oo, a former student activist who now lives in exile. “The current problems we are seeing show that the military still wants control of various power structures in the country,” he said by phone from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. “History has shown the military has failed to be conciliatory toward its opponents, so we don’t know what will happen next.”
