Sergio Reyes ran the first marathon of his life here in 2005. He was out of college, ready to stretch out a bit, so he thought he'd give it a try. It didn't go all that well.
"It was my worst marathon ever," he said. "Oh, God, I finished like 60th or something."
Thing were a bit different at Sunday's Twin Cities Marathon. Reyes, 28, from Palmdale, Calif., broke away from two other runners at the 23½-mile mark and went on to win the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and two seconds. He finished seven seconds ahead of Jeffrey Eggleston, a New Yorker training in Flagstaff, Ariz., and more than a minute ahead of third-place finisher Fernando Cabada, the 2008 winner.
It was a personal best time for Reyes, more than a minute faster than the 2:15:30 he posted as the top American runner at the 2009 Chicago Marathon. The Twin Cities Marathon is also the USA men's marathon championship, so it also earned Reyes and Eggleston a berth in the 2010 world championships. twin cities marathon
