MOHALI: VVS Laxman struck a superb unbeaten 73 as India fought back from the brink of defeat to beat Australia by one wicket in a thrilling first Test in Mohali.

Laxman was ably assisted by tail-ender Ishant Sharma as India rallied from 124-8, but when he was dismissed for 31 the hosts still required 11 to win.

Laxman scored 73 runs off 79 balls and added 81 off 21.4 overs for the ninth-wicket with Ishant Sharma (31) after it seemed the tourists were closing in on victory.

But Laxman and last man Pragyan Ojha held their nerve to see India to their victory target of 216-run half an hour before the tea break despite the best efforts of Ben Hilfenhaus, who took four for 57. India beat Australia in Mohali Test
